Therapy room

Individual therapy

The individual psychotherapy we offer gives you a regular time and place to think and talk about the feelings you have about yourself and other people, especially those you are close to and those important to you.

You might discuss:

  • What’s happening in your life at the moment – how you do things and the part you play in things going right or wrong for you.
  • What has happened in the past.
  • How the past can affect how you are feeling, thinking and behaving right now.

The therapist will help you to make connections to the past and the present and they may comment on what happens in the sessions as you talk together. As you can understand the connections better, you can make decisions based on what you want or need now, rather than on what your past experiences drive you to do.
At WCTS we offer weekly sessions of 50 minutes and you will meet with the same therapist at the same time and day each week.

Can psychotherapy help me?

Psychotherapy can help people deal with mental health issues and emotional distress. You may helped with:

  • Anxiety or an inability to cope or concentrate
  • Inability to deal with stress or recover from stressful situations
  • Lack of confidence and self-esteem
  • Coping with the effects of abuse either as a child or adult
  • Making or sustaining relationships or repeatedly becoming involved in unsatisfying or destructive relationships
  • Difficulty in coming to terms with losses such as bereavement, relationship breakdown or unemployment
  • Self harm
  • Panic attacks and phobia
  • Have difficulty managing feelings like guilt, shame, anger or trusting others.

What is Art Therapy?

Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art materials as its primary mode of communication. You do not need to have previous experience or skill in art. The overall aim of the therapist is to help you to change and grow on a personal level through the use of art materials in a safe and facilitating environment.

Art therapy can be particularly helpful to people who find it hard to express their thoughts and feelings verbally.

Art therapists have a considerable understanding of art processes underpinned by a sound knowledge of therapeutic practice.

How long will I be in therapy?

At WCTS we currently offer between 16 sessions and 2 years individual therapy. The length of time will depend on your individual needs and will be discussed at assessment and when you start in therapy. Sometimes you might have a period of individual therapy and then join a group therapy at a later date.

How will I know if therapy is right for me?

You will be offered an assessment appointment at WCTS, where the different therapy options will be explored with you. If individual psychotherapy is seen as the most suitable option to help with your difficulties, you will be placed on a therapy waiting list. We sometimes offer 4 to 6 sessions of therapy if you are unsure whether therapy is going to be helpful for you and this will give you and the therapist an opportunity to explore this at more depth than is possible at assessment.

Will therapy be confidential?

The issues you bring to therapy will be confidential between you and the therapist unless there are concerns that might mean you or another person could be at serious risk. Any concerns regarding confidentiality and risk will be explored with you fully at assessment and during therapy.

What are the possible drawbacks?

It is not uncommon to feel anxious at the start of therapy and therapy can make you feel worse before you feel better. It is useful to talk about these feelings in therapy and the therapist can help you deal with this over time. If for any reason, therapy at WCTS does not seem the right option for you, the therapist can help you think about other options that might be more helpful at that point in time.

Working together

Group psychotherapy helps people to talk about and share their difficulties. This increases our understanding of ourselves and improves our relationships with others. Read more about Group Therapy here.

WCTS services

We offer individual and group counselling, some are creative or art based.  Support work with wider concerns is available so women can get more from counselling.

Due to demand and capacity we vary who we can offer support to – read more about this and complete a request for support here.
